hey all,
just wondering if there was anyone else out there who's trying to change from passenger to pilot, i'm currently working for a major us airline and love to fly everywhere i can, but keep running into the barrier that i don't like the flight schedule or don't want to make a connection, besides sometimes i only want to go short distances that would take less time to drive than to fly commercial, working on my private lisence, lots of encouragement from pilots at work but little action, was hoping i'm not the only one with a dream, or better yet anyone done it?

Re: getting out of the passenger compartment
Fri, September 2, 2005 - 6:17 AMwell i'm going to be a jump forward trying to get out of the passenger compartment, yesterday i accepted a position within my airline as an airline dispatcher. break my heart training is 6 weeks in fort lauderdale, fl, which should cover lots of material that's also in my PPL curriculuim, and of course the training mandates 5 hours in the cockpit jumpseat, something that few people get to see on a commercial airliner anymore, and afterwards i can jumpseat on my airline and sit up there all i want, should be a good opportunity to learn more, only catch is i have to live on eastern shore of MD, and roads are all toll and would be quicker to fly than to drive most places, so that PPL looks alit more enticing, good luck for everyone

Re: getting out of the passenger compartment
Fri, September 2, 2005 - 9:10 AMYou want to go fixed wing of helicopters Lucas? FIxed wing training is cheaper, but these helicoperts are a blast, ha ha. If you just want a privite, just go for the fixed wing, it's waayy cheaper. Our rotorwing pilots are paying 40 to 60 grand to get a commerical, and then have to instruct for a year or 2 to get 1500 Hours, not much you can do in Helicopters with less that amount of time other than instruct. Although there are a couple of tour operators in Alaska that are hiring with 750 hours if you have some turbine time. If you go the fixed wing route, instruc for a while then hit a small regional like Horizon Air for a 1st Officer job. You can do it if you put your mind to it. Me, flying is my hobbie, I work on em, wouldn't want to spoil it by flying for a living. Good luck. -

Re: getting out of the passenger compartment
Fri, September 2, 2005 - 11:42 PMactually have a friend who grew up with planes, dad is a cropduster and doing well, she got her degree from purdue in an aviation dept, and is working as an FO for Piedmont Airlines, 2nd rated express carrier only to horizon, and is working on her hours to get a job as a shoo in at alaskan where she did her internship with chief pilot office, me i don't think i would dare ruin it by doing it professionally unless there simply wasn't anything else to pay bills, so i'll stick with being a dispatcher and working greatly towards my PPL, instrument, maybe sometime before i have to give up flying for good i'll get in the rotorary wing, but for now PPL is more than i'm able to take care of, though the jet fuel in my blood and ringing ears from the power of military flights will always keep me looking to the sky -

Re: getting out of the passenger compartment- Update
Sun, October 30, 2005 - 2:57 PMhey all i'm an FAA certified dispatcher (ADX), apparently it's the same written test as the ATP (airline transport pilot), and doing the boring company training here in maryland, the dispatched class was fun, thought it would be more difficult, but once you get the written out of the way the class is alright, and the practical is based more on the class than the written, at least at the sheffield school of aeronautics, if you're going to get an ADX go here, got lots of ground to cover before i get the PPL though, and need funding to do it, gonna be working lots of overtime to pay for it....don't want to do loans again, can't stand to have them hanging over my head....donations welcome...j/k -

Re: getting out of the passenger compartment- Update
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 9:11 PMI've been a private pilot since I was 17, but the last few years I have been staying current with simulators. I built a full size simulator with a 60x40" screen, rumble seat, throttle-stick-pedals, and a kenwood sound system. All powered by X-planes. I love to pick a plane and shoot T&Gs at Edwards. I've gotten good enough to be able to discern the differences and nuances between different craft. I'd like to start practicing instrument approaches next.
